Harmful food you should never give your cat

Sometimes we think cats know what’s best for them when it's time to eat. But the fact that they'll walk away from a piece of bad meat doesn't mean they'll bypass a can of tuna.... and that can of tuna can be just as dangerous. In fact, you may be surprised to learn some of the more common foods that your cats should never eat.

Onions & Garlic

Both are poisonous, even in powdered form.

Eggs

Can lead to salmonella poisoning.

Alcohol

Just the slightest drop can cause intoxication, coma and death. If your cat did survive; they could suffer damage to their liver and brain.

Yeast Dough

It will expand in your cat’s stomach causing the stomach to stretch. Also the fermentation process in the yeast will release alcohol into your cat’s body.

Raw Fish

Highly poisonous due to the bacteria which the raw fish carries. It can also destroy the vitamin thiamine which is essential for your cat. Without thiamine your cat may suffer neurological problems, loss of appetite, seizures, even death.

Green Tomatoes & Potatoes

Both contain a poisonous alkaloid called glycoalkaloid solanine which can lead to lower gastrointestinal problems.

Chocolate

Surprisingly this is a complete NO due to the fact that it can cause tremors, irregular heartbeat,, seizures and even death.

Milk Products

May be ok for kittens but definitely not for adult cats, as adult cats are lactose intolerant.

Caffeine

Even a small amount can cause restlessness and heart palpitations. Too much can lead to

death.

Xylitol

Found in products such as lollies, chewing gum, toothpaste and some baked goods. It is highly toxic to cats and can cause liver failure.

We love our pets so it is understandable that we want them to get the same pleasure as we do from some of those foods listed above. Their bodies are not made to consume all human foods the way we do. If you are unsure about a particular food it is important to do your research or talk to your vet as they are the experts in animal health and nutrition.
